APRIL BREAKFACTS: Donor Relations and Special Events

“Donors want to know that their gift means something, that it goes somewhere, and that the organization appreciates the contribution,” Marie Kelly explained at CNM’s April BreakFACTS “Progression of Giving: Donor Relations and Special Events” held on April 29, 2014.  Marie Kelly, Director of Corporate and Foundation Relations at Stonehill College, and Kim Wheeler, Special Events and Stewardship Coordinator at Stonehill College, led the discussion on best practices in donor relations and special events.

Throughout the morning, participants gained valuable tips and tricks while sharing their organization’s methods for stewarding and events.  Kelly’s discussion of proper donor relation policies included a discussion on Gift Policies and Procedures and the crucial “7 Thank You” rule that every nonprofit should follow after receiving any donation.  Donor Relations has four key elements: gift acceptance and management, acknowledgement, donor recognition and events, and reporting/stewardship. Kelly and Wheeler seamlessly covered all four elements while incorporating the expertise both bring to the topic.

The discussion then switched gears to discuss the most common types of events that nonprofits hold: donor recognition, and fundraising and “friend”raising events.  Wheeler conversed with the attendees about the importance of holding events in all of the areas so to best include all donor bases. The workshop concluded with Wheeler sharing some of her tips on details that go into making every event a success.  Attendees were treated to viewing sample publications, documents, and detail pieces that Kelly and Wheeler mentioned throughout the workshop so to spark ideas for their own organizations to incorporate.

CNM’s last BreakFACTS of the spring series, “Progression of Giving: Your Fundraising Strategy” facilitated by Doug Smith, Assistant Vice President for Advancement and Director of Development at Stonehill College, will be held on May 20, 2014.  Don’t miss out on this interactive workshop designed to assist participants in creating an achievable fundraising strategy for their organization!
