Students in Professor Boyle’s ‘Development of American News Media’ class Skyped with 2006 Pulitzer Prize winner for ‘Explanatory Reporting’ David Finkel on Oct. 20.

Finkel, a reporter for the ‘Washington Post,’ spoke about his 2010 book “The Good Soldiers,” citing the eight months he spent in Iraq with the Second Battalion, 16th Infantry Regiment of the Fourth Infantry Brigade Combat Team, First Infantry Division (2-16 for short) researching the content of his book.

The battalion, nicknamed the Rangers, was hesitant at first to embrace the ‘Post’ reporter, Finkel said. But over time Finkel became good friends with one of the soldiers, an occurrence that rarely happens when he is covering a story, he said.

Students listened to Finkel’s story and got the opportunity to ask the reporter and author questions, senior and Features Editor Tom Darcy said.

The Skype session took place in the MacPháidín Library’s new DisCo room, a space that replaced the old computer lab.
